Joe Benarroch, X’s head of business operations, stated that this action was taken to prioritize safety.
Users attempting to search for Swift on the platform are met with a message stating, “Something went wrong. Try reloading.”
The dissemination of fake graphic images of Swift sparked widespread alarm, leading to intervention from US officials and concerned fans.
X, formerly known as Twitter, released a statement condemning the posting of non-consensual nudity on the platform, emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy towards such content.
They vowed to actively remove all identified images and take appropriate actions against the responsible accounts.
The decision to block searches for Swift on the platform was made with caution as the company prioritizes safety, according to Mr. Benarroch.
The issue has garnered attention from the White House, with calls for legislation to address the misuse of AI technology on social media platforms.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized the disproportionate impact on women and girls, urging platforms to enforce rules against the spread of misinformation and non-consensual imagery.
US politicians have also advocated for new laws to criminalize the creation of deepfake images, which have seen a significant increase fueled by advancements in AI technology.
While there are currently no federal laws addressing deepfakes, some states have taken steps to tackle the issue.
In the UK, sharing deepfake pornography became illegal under the Online Safety Act of 2023.
