Journalists in South Africa hold vigil for colleagues killed in Gaza conflict
In a late-night vigil on Sunday, journalists in South Africa gathered to honor their counterparts who lost their lives in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict with Israel.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 83 journalists and media workers have been killed since the outbreak of the conflict last October, marking it as “the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.”
Deshnee Subramany, the organizer of the vigil, expressed solidarity not only with journalists in Gaza but also with those affected in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and elsewhere.
She emphasized the unprecedented nature of the journalist casualties in Gaza.
South Africa has been vocal in its criticism of Israel throughout the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
