South African gospel singer Kelly Khumalo accused of orchestrating murder of football star Senzo Meyiwa
According to testimony in a Gauteng High Court, South African gospel singer Kelly Khumalo allegedly orchestrated the murder of her then-boyfriend, football star Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot while trying to protect Khumalo from armed robbers in 2014.
Five suspects were arrested in 2020 in connection with the case.
Lead investigator Bongani Gininda told the court on Wednesday that Khumalo was implicated in “a contractual assassination or hit.”
Khumalo’s spokesperson informed the media that they have faith in the legal process, adding that Khumalo’s legal team is actively handling the situation and that she cannot comment at this time.
The trial of the accused has garnered significant attention in South Africa. Khumalo came under suspicion after police documents were leaked in 2020 following the arrests.
One of the suspects allegedly stated in a confession that Khumalo had instructed them to kill Meyiwa.
The lead investigator also cited cell phone linkages connecting Khumalo to the suspects.
Colonel Lambertus Steyn from the National Cold Case Investigation Unit testified last year that Khumalo had been in contact with one of the accused multiple times before Meyiwa’s murder.
Additionally, Khumalo possessed a photograph of money in a transparent bag on her phone, similar to one found on a suspect’s phone.
The court is currently determining the admissibility of confession statements, as two suspects claim they were made under duress.
Despite having one child together, evidence suggests Khumalo and Meyiwa had a falling out, with communication records indicating Khumalo’s desire to eliminate him as early as 2013.
