Ugandan opposition documentary “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” nominated for Oscar
Ugandan singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine’s documentary, “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” highlighting his opposition campaign against President Yoweri Museveni, has earned an Oscar nomination for best documentary feature film.
The film, along with four others, including the Tunisian documentary “Four Daughters,” is in contention for the prestigious award.
Expressing gratitude, Bobi Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi, acknowledged the significance of the Ugandan story reaching the Academy Awards.
He stated, “Today the fight for democracy in Uganda and around the world lives on. Thank you for this recognition!”
Bobi Wine, who contested against President Museveni in the 2021 elections, faced allegations of manipulated votes, sparking nationwide opposition protests.
Human rights groups reported security forces’ actions, including alleged killings and arrests of protestors.
Bobi Wine himself has been detained multiple times for criticizing President Museveni’s rule.
After a five-day blockade at Bobi Wine’s home, imposed to prevent his participation in a planned protest, security forces lifted the restrictions on Tuesday.
President Museveni, in power since 1986, faces accusations of suppressing dissent, a claim he consistently denies, asserting Uganda’s democratic status.
