Mahama Supports TUC’s Demand For The Government To Rescind The 15% VAT On Electricity

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and former president John Dramani Mahama are calling on the government to eliminate the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on power.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) voiced its disapproval of the government’s intention to charge customers of power above the lifeline with a fifteen percent value-added tax (VAT) during a news conference in Accra on Tuesday.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer expressed his support for the repeal of the tax in a Facebook post on Wednesday, claiming that the new government’s proposal will make matters worse for Ghanaians, who already face enough hardships.

“Implementing VAT on electricity consumption will increase tariffs by almost 21% and exacerbate the hardship on Ghanaians. This will affect the prices of goods, services, and transport fares.

I agree with organised labour that the government must reverse its decision to start collecting VAT on electricity consumption,” he wrote.

If elected in the general elections of 2024, he pledged that his administration would put forth great effort to address the nation’s economic difficulties and lessen the suffering of the populace.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is eager and ready to address Ghana’s economic challenges and provide substantial relief to Ghanaians upon assumption of office in January 2025,” he said.
