Chris Hughton, Black Stars head coach dismissed
The Ghana Football Association has officially parted ways with Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton, as revealed in a brief statement released late Tuesday evening.
The announcement stated, “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.”
Additionally, the GFA Executive Council has opted to disband the technical team of the Black Stars, and a future roadmap for the team will be presented by the Ghana Football Association in the coming days.
This decision follows the disappointing performance of the Black Stars, who failed to secure a victory in any of their three group games during AFCON 2023.
About Hughton’s appointment
In February 2023, Chris Hughton assumed the position of head coach for the Ghanaian national football team, succeeding Otto Addo, whose tenure with the men’s senior national team concluded after the 2022 World Cup.
Hughton’s responsibilities included overseeing Ghana’s remaining qualifiers for AFCON 2023, guiding the team through the tournament in Ivory Coast, and managing the initial stages of the Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
Prior to stepping into the role of head coach, Hughton had been appointed as the Technical Adviser for the Black Stars before the two-legged play-offs in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria, and he continued in this capacity during the Qatar tournament.
