Apple introduces ‘Stolen Device Protection’ update to safeguard against thieves
Apple has released a significant security update for iPhones, aiming to prevent unauthorized access to users’ personal data in case of theft.
The “Stolen Device Protection” feature, included in the iOS 17.3 update, introduces added security layers by requiring biometric data, such as Face ID or Touch ID, for accessing information.
To enable Stolen Device Protection, users need to update their iPhone, navigate to Face ID & Passcode in settings, enter their passcode, and turn on the feature.
This functionality requires two-factor authentication and the activation of “Find My” for the associated Apple ID.
Previously, iPhone users could access sensitive information and make significant changes with just a passcode.
With the new protection, biometric data is necessary for actions like viewing sensitive data, changing the Apple ID password, adjusting biometric settings, and disabling security features.
For high-risk actions, users will experience an hour-long security delay after providing biometric data before making further changes.
An Apple spokesperson highlighted the continuous efforts to enhance user protection, noting that Stolen Device Protection adds an advanced layer of security in scenarios where a thief might observe the passcode entry.
These additional security measures are triggered when users are away from familiar locations, with the device automatically learning and storing such locations.
