Odododiodio NDC parliamentary election postponed indefinitely due to lawsuit
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indefinitely postponed the parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodio constituency following a court injunction obtained by a disqualified candidate.
In a statement issued on January 17, 2024, the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, announced a temporary suspension of all activities related to the primaries in the Odododiodio constituency.
The disqualified candidate contested the decision barring him from participating in the primary, leading to the court granting an interlocutory injunction that restrains the NDC from conducting the election until the matter is resolved.
The NDC clarified that the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) made the decision to postpone the election during a meeting held on January 16, 2024. The party has called on all branch and constituency executives to uphold peace and harmony until further notice.
Expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the postponement, the NDC has assured its members that a new date for the primaries will be communicated once it is determined.
Background
In November 2023, Michael Nii Yarboi Annan was disqualified by the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC from participating in the parliamentary election for the Odododiodioo Constituency.
In a report released last year, the NDC clarified that the decision to disqualify Mr. Annan was based on the findings of a special committee established by the Functional Executive Committee of the party.
The committee concluded that, in accordance with Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution, Mr. Annan did not meet the eligibility criteria for contesting parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodoo Constituency. This article specifies that a member must be an active party member at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations.
The NDC highlighted that, after reviewing the evidence presented, the special committee was unable to endorse Mr. Annan’s qualification for participation in the parliamentary primaries.
