2022 Demographic And Health Survey Reveals Health Challenges In Ghana: Urgent Action Needed for Progress

Statistics from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey show that Ghana has retrogressed some health indicators across the 16 regions.

50 percent of women aged 15–49 are overweight, only 5 percent have tested for cervical cancer, and about 54 percent have issues accessing health care.

Speaking at the launch of the survey report in Accra, government statistician Professor Samuel Kwabena Anim noted that health improvement is a shared responsibility.

He said efforts must be accelerated if the sustainable development goals are to be achieved.

Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, director general of the Ghana Health Service, said though the target for neonatal and infant mortality has been achieved, there are still challenges, especially with newly created regions, and called for improved funding to tackle the issues.

The survey was conducted with a sample of 15,014 women aged 15–49 and 7,044 men aged 15–49, with a response rate of 98 percent for women and 97 percent for men. It was conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service with funding from development partners.
