UN appeals for urgent funds as worsening drought threatens millions in Ethiopia

Ethiopia

The UN’s humanitarian agency expresses concern over the escalating drought in Ethiopia and calls for additional funds to enhance its response.

Approximately four million people in conflict-affected regions, including Amhara, Oromia, Afar, and Tigray, have been affected, according to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha).

The agency emphasizes that multiple crises have compromised people’s resilience to climate shocks like drought, making millions vulnerable to worsening destitution.

Despite the federal government in Addis Ababa downplaying fears of an imminent famine, it asserts ongoing efforts to provide aid.

Tigray authorities recently disclosed the deaths of over 200 individuals due to starvation, reinforcing last month’s warning about the region being “on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.”
