A massive explosion occurred in the Nigerian city of Ibadan, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving 77 others injured.

Rescue and recovery operations are underway in seven suburbs of the city, Nigeria’s third most populous.

The cause of the explosion remains uncertain, but authorities suspect it may be linked to mining explosives stored in a residential house.

Images depict severely damaged buildings and vehicles destroyed by the blast. Disturbing videos circulating on social media capture the destruction of a mall in Bodija, a residential area.

A witness recounted, “We heard a loud bang around 07:30pm. Dominoes Pizza and Ace Mall in Bodija were destroyed.”

In response to the incident, the police have committed to conducting a prompt investigation.

Regional governor Seyi Makinde revealed, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast.”
