Former Gambian interior minister faces trial in Switzerland for alleged crimes against humanity
Ousman Sonko stands trial in Switzerland, accused of numerous charges, including involvement in killings, torture, and sexual assault against political opponents, as per his lawyer Philippe Currat cited by AFP news agency.
Sonko vehemently denies all accusations.
Having sought refuge in Switzerland in 2016 just before the downfall of Gambia’s oppressive regime led by President Yahya Jammeh, Sonko was arrested following NGOs presenting Swiss authorities with evidence linking him to severe human rights violations.
Nine individuals purportedly victimized by Sonko are scheduled to provide testimony during the trial.
Notably, he holds the distinction of being the highest-ranking former government official from Gambia prosecuted in Europe in such a manner.
Switzerland exercises its legal proceedings under the concept of universal jurisdiction, allowing for the prosecution of individuals within its borders for crimes committed elsewhere, in this case, alleged crimes against humanity linked to Sonko.
