Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji spreads Christmas cheer with medication donation to Sekondi Prisons
In a heartwarming Christmas Day gesture, the Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji has generously contributed medications worth thousands of cedis to the Sekondi Prisons.
The donation, aimed at enhancing healthcare within the prison, was prompted by a request made during a previous visit by the Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji to donate sanitary pads to the female prisons.
Speaking to Beach FM, Rotarian Edwin Amanor, President of the Takoradi-Anaji Rotary Club, emphasized the club’s commitment to disease prevention and treatment, stating, “one of our focus areas is disease prevention and treatment. So we were here some months ago to donate sanitary pads to the female prisons, and as part of the needs they sent to us was insufficient medications. So we put it before our board, and it was approved.”
The Takoradi-Anaji Rotary Club also conducted a free health screening and medication exercise in Kwesimintsim, along with creating awareness about mental health. The recent donation to the Sekondi Prisons serves as a compassionate response to the expressed needs of incarcerated individuals.
“We went to Kwesimintsim to do a free health screening and medication exercise and also creation of mental health awareness. After that we are here to do respond to their request. They are our brothers and sisters who have found themselves in the prisons and we believe that they can also get support and proper treatment”, he said.
Superintendent Judith Abbew, 2nd-in-Command of the Sekondi Female Prisons, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the prisons, acknowledging the significant impact the medications would have on the health needs of the inmates. She also took the opportunity to appeal to the public for support in improving the overall well-being and feeding of the inmates.
“On behalf of the Officer-in-charge of the female prisons, ADP Mettle, our officers, and most especially the inmates, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji for this kind gesture. The donation of these medications will go a long way of helping the health needs of our inmates.”
“I want to urge the general public to also come to our aid. Currently looking at the feeding rate of our inmates, which is GH¢1.80 per person – it is nothing to write home about. So we are pleading and urging the public to come to their aid, most especially, the female prisons of Sekondi Prisons to support and assist the officers in catering for the welfare needs of the inmates,” she stressed.
President Amanor revealed the Rotary Club’s plans for the upcoming year, expressing gratitude to fellow Rotarians, friends of the club, and benevolent organizations for their support.
“As Rotary, our motto is ‘Service above Self.’ Next year is too young, but we have good plans and serviceable projects we want to deliver to the various communities. We will try our best together with the good people who are behind us, the organizations, our friends, and the Takoradi-Anaji Rotarians to deliver.”
