Guinea-Bissau President sacks Prime Minister just a week after reinstatement

Martins

Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has dismissed Prime Minister Geraldo Martins, merely a week after reinstating him to the position.

Martins initially assumed office as PM in August but lost the position earlier this month when President Embaló dissolved the government after a thwarted coup attempt on December 1st.

Despite being reinstated as PM last week, a presidential decree issued on Wednesday declared the appointment of Rui Duarte de Barros, who previously served as the country’s transitional PM from 2012 to 2014, to replace Martins.

During President Embaló’s absence at the UN’s COP28 climate conference in Dubai last month, clashes occurred between two army factions in the capital, Bissau.

Embaló labeled the incident as a foiled coup and vowed “serious consequences” for those involved, marking the second attempt against his leadership in less than two years.
