Xavier Sosu proposes additional Islamic holidays for inclusiveness and religious diversity
Madina’s Member of Parliament, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has introduced a bill aimed at amending the country’s Public Holidays Act 2001 (Act 601) to include two additional Islamic public holidays—Tashreeq (a day following the Eid-al-Adha Festival) and Shaqq (a day preceding the Eid-al-Fitr).
The proposal, currently under processing after submission on November 29, 2023, seeks to foster inclusiveness and recognize religious diversity.
In an interview, Mr. Sosu emphasized that the amendment aims to promote inclusivity and religious diversity, acknowledging the importance of ensuring that everyone feels valued.
He argued that the existing legislation is perceived as unfair and discriminatory, hindering the full expression of the Islamic faith as protected by the 1992 Constitution and international laws.
A statement released by the Madina MP on Thursday highlighted that the proposed amendment aligns with broader efforts to build a more progressive, productive, and inclusive society.
Mr. Sosu emphasized the fundamental right to freedom of religion, citing Article 21(c), which grants every Ghanaian the freedom to practice and manifest any religion. He asserted that, as the second dominant religion in Ghana, Muslims should have equal opportunities for celebrating religious festivals.
