Jinapor justifies Ghana-Barari DV Lithium agreement
Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has once again upheld the controversial mining lease agreement between Ghana and Barari DV for lithium exploration in Ewoyaa, Central Region.
Responding to apprehensions from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and stakeholders regarding perceived unfavorable terms, Jinapor affirmed that the agreement prioritizes value addition to Ghana’s green minerals and encourages local participation through listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).
In a meeting with Civil Society Organizations in Accra, Jinapor highlighted this move as groundbreaking in the minerals industry, emphasizing the commitment to positive outcomes for Ghana.
He assured that the mining lease includes strict measures requiring the retention of a significant portion of the value chain in the country, achieved by establishing a chemical plant and refinery in Ghana. According to Jinapor, this represents a departure from past mining lease agreements.
Jinapor stated that the government is fully content with the terms of the agreement and seeks the support of the people of Ghana. In response to concerns raised by the Paramount Chief of Mankessim, His Eminent Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI, Jinapor assured him of community engagement with local stakeholders.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the 1% community development fund from the Lithium Mining concession is unprecedented in mining laws, underscoring the government’s dedication to the well-being of local communities.
