Sekondi Market Traders Anticipate Christmas Boost Despite Shortages in Seasonal Foodstuffs and Sluggish Business Trends
As the Christmas festivities are draw closer, Beach News visited the Sekondi Market to interact with some traders and find out the current situation of food, clothes, and other commodities.
According to the traders, some foodstuffs are in short supply due to their seasonal nature.
However, they were hopeful that patronage which is low at the moment will pick up.
They say business activities this year were not good as compared to last year.
I sell soft drinks here at the Sekondi Market. I would say , sales has not been too good this year. People wish to buy our wares but due to financial constraints they are unable to.
Sales have been slow for me this year, especially during this Christmas season. There is price hikes everywhere. Our customers do not even come to ask, and not to talk of buying. We just sit by our wares and sell nothing. The clothes I sell are still there, no one is coming to buy them. It really difficult.
A bag of cassava now sell for 500 cedis, small basin of palm fruits goes for one hundred and 50 cedis , a sack of garden eggs also sell at 700 cedis. There is little money in the system, which is forcing people not to buy food stuffs. We are hoping that the year ahead will be good for us.
A box of tomatoes is now sold at 3,500, even with that you need to go as far as Accra to get some. Last year, it was sold at 2000 cedis. It is really difficult. We went for loans, so when we come to the market ,and sales are not good , it affects us.
