Farmer sentenced to 5 years for threatening Chereponi DCE’s life

The Circuit Court in Yendi, located in the Northern Region, has handed down a 5-year prison sentence to a 45-year-old farmer for making threats to kill the District Chief Executive of Chereponi, in violation of section 75 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960, Act 29.

The prosecutor, Detective/Chief Inspector Nicodemus York, detailed that on November 20, the accused, Abubakari Numburu, residing in Kwame Nansoni in the Chereponi district of the North East Region, called the District Chief Executive, Nashiru Zuwera Muda, and issued a threat: “I will kill you if you dare enter Chereponi.”

The complainant reported the incident to the Chereponi police, leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect with the assistance of National Security.

During his caution statement, the accused confessed to the offense, leading to his conviction by H/H Justice Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire, who imposed a 5-year prison sentence.

In a separate case, the same judge sentenced a 33-year-old scrap dealer, Alhassan Nurudeen, to 10 years imprisonment for defrauding by false pretense.

According to the statement of offense, in June 2023, Nurudeen defrauded Tahidu Iddrisu of over Sixteen thousand Ghana cedis. The complainant expressed interest in purchasing a tipper truck from the accused, who claimed his father owned a garage with such trucks.

The accused, after providing a contact allegedly belonging to the complainant’s father, instructed the complainant to transfer six thousand, five hundred Ghana cedis via mobile money. When the tipper truck was not delivered, the case was reported to the Yendi police.

In his cautioned statement, the accused admitted taking money but claimed the father was unreachable abroad. The judge, Justice Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire, convicted him on his plea and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.
