ECG pays Sunon Asogli $30m settling half of $60m debt
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has settled a partial payment of $30 million towards the $60 million debt owed to Sunon Asogli Power Limited.
Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of ECG, revealed this development on Citi Prime News on Friday, December 8, noting that the payment was made on Thursday, December 7.
Sunon Asogli had temporarily shut down operations on December 4, citing the government’s delayed financial commitments to power plants as the primary reason.
However, the company decided to suspend the shutdown for a week after receiving assurance from the government regarding the debt clearance.
Mr. Mahama assured that ECG is dedicated to strengthening its partnerships with independent power producers, emphasizing that arrangements are in place for a second tranche of $30 million to be paid to Sunon Asogli.
He highlighted the commitment to avoiding delays in payments and stated that discussions are ongoing to enhance the efficiency and affordability of the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Sunon Asogli, emphasizing the company’s integral role in Ghana’s growth.
