Seychelles declares state of emergency following massive explosion and flooding
Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan has implemented a state of emergency after a massive explosion struck an industrial zone on Mahé, the main island.
The directive mandates all citizens, except essential workers, to remain at home. Numerous individuals have sustained injuries from the blast.
The explosion occurred at a construction and quarrying company storing explosives, causing extensive destruction in the Providence industrial area.
Surprisingly, the impact reached the international airport, located 4km (2.5 miles) away. Schools are shut, and movement is restricted to and from the holiday islands.
“The Seychelles international Airport is still operational and ferry services between islands are operating for visitors,” the country’s official account said on X.
The UK government has advised individuals on Mahé to stay indoors until further updates are provided.
