With the Christmas festivities fast approaching, the public is being urged to stay safe especially when engaging in sexual activities.
On Beach FM’s “Keeping It Safe” initiative, the Monitoring and Evaluation manager at Life Relief Foundation, who is also a partner at the Ghana AIDS Commission, Mr. Ato Kwamina Abakah, speaking in an interview on the Western echo, asserts that the Western region is deemed safe in terms of the spread of HIV, due to the various pragmatic measures put in place to help stop its spread.
“We have various activities within STMA and within the country that is helping to reduce such infections and one of the activities I’ll mention is index testing, that is when someone is infected with HIV we try to contact the sexual partners of the person and also biological children and offer then HIV testing services”.
Mr. Abakah, while giving an overview of the statistical data of HIV prevalence in the Ghana, advised that people who have tested positive for HIV, should continue taking their prescribed medication to stay safe during this festive season.
“In Ghana our current HIV prevalence is 1.66 meaning in every 100 persons, at least 2 people are infected with HIV. Our current HIV population stands around over 300,000 people”
He further acclaimed that during such festive seasons, people’s overexcitement tend reduce their thinking capabilities, thus advising that individuals protect themselves when engaging in sexual activities
“I’m just admonishing people who are infected with HIV to continue taking their medication, it’s daily and if you can’t abstain from sex, use condom”.
