University of Ghana staff, TEWU, consider strike over unpaid market premiums

The Senior Staff Association and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union at the University of Ghana have issued a threat to go on strike if the university’s management does not settle the Interim Market Premium arrears for some staff by December 13.

Despite efforts, including legal intervention, to compel the university to pay arrears spanning from 2010 to 2018, the associations claim that all attempts have been unsuccessful.

Isaac Donkor, the National Chairman of the Association, stated in an interview with Citi News that they are convinced the strike action is necessary to pressure management into clearing the outstanding arrears.

He mentioned that the court had ordered payment of the market premium, but since 2018, negotiations have been unproductive. The National Labour Commission provided three timelines, all of which were reportedly missed by the university.

The Association has given the university until December 13 to fulfill the payment, and if not, they are prepared to initiate a strike, as their members are urging action due to the delayed payment that should have been settled long ago.
