Govt allocates GH¢20 million to settle capitation grant arrears

GH¢20 million

The government has announced the allocation of GH¢20 million for the disbursement of capitation grants to public basic schools nationwide.

This initiative, designed to replace parental fees in public basic schools, aims to enhance access to education and support efforts to improve school performance.

Delays in grant payments, spanning two years, prompted concerns from the Minority in Parliament and education sector stakeholders, who highlighted the adverse effects on basic education.

Responding to inquiries in Parliament, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum assured that steps have been taken to address the arrears.

“Mr. Speaker, capitation grant arrears of GH¢15 million were disbursed to schools in May 2023 and the remaining arrears of last year amounting to GH¢20 million have been released by the Ministry of Finance and are currently being processed for disbursement. In addition, GH¢4.2 million of this year’s capitation is also being processed for disbursement.”
