Kenyan authorities have detained a woman accused of throwing her eight-month-old baby into the Indian Ocean on Sunday.
Witnesses recounted that the woman purportedly tossed the infant from a ferry as it arrived at the coastal town of Mombasa.
A video circulating on social media captured divers rescuing the child, provoking public outrage towards the woman and relief over the baby’s rescue.
Reports from privately-owned K24 and Citizen TV indicated that the baby received immediate medical attention at the Red Cross Centre and was discharged in fair condition, while the mother was taken in for questioning by the police.
The Kenya Red Cross affirmed that the baby was safe in their care at the rescue center. The specific charges against the woman remain uncertain at this point.
