First-year senior high school students nationwide are expected to commence classes today, despite widespread appeals for a reconsideration of the reopening date.

Despite calls from parents and other concerned parties for an extension of the reporting date, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has remained firm on maintaining the December 4 deadline.

Parliament also urged the Minister of Education to reconsider and shift the reopening date to the first week of January, but the GES rejected this proposal.

In response to the short notice and the inconvenience it poses to students, parents, and school staff, Parliament suggested the first week of January 2024 as a more suitable time for the resumption of academic activities.

However, the GES insisted on the December 4 date, emphasizing the expectation that schools will commence registration and orientation for students on that day.

Through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), a total of 585,797 out of 598,839 candidates have been placed in various Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training Schools (TVET) across the country.

Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Yaw Opoku Mensah, encouraged parents facing placement challenges to visit dedicated centers nationwide to resolve any issues.

He highlighted the established system by the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to address challenges and changes in student placement, with support available at the national office in Adabraka and all 16 administrative regions, as well as a 24/7 command center.
