GAF refutes allegations of military officers enjoying civilian mistreatment
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has rejected claims suggesting that military personnel derive pleasure from mistreating civilians. This response follows recent concerns over reported instances of military brutality in various locations, including Ashaiman, Garu, and Ejura.
In an exclusive interview, Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh, the General Officer Commanding the central command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), emphasized that the military is committed to preserving the peace of the country, despite public criticism of their interactions with civilians.
He asserted that the primary focus of the military is to ensure public safety and maintain order in society, rather than engaging in the brutalization of civilians.
According to Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh, the military approaches internal security operations with the goal of supporting the Police, using minimum force to restore law and order.
Regarding allegations of military officers being involved in misconduct such as armed robbery and other social vices, he clarified that such actions cannot be generalized to the entire Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
He highlighted that officers implicated in such activities undergo thorough investigations, and appropriate sanctions are applied in accordance with the military’s disciplinary procedures.
“The military doesn’t engage in armed robbery, the individual goes out there to do his things, the military has a way to correct infractions and therefore when these things come to our attention we take the necessary measures according to our disciplinary procedures to engage the individual and correct him,” he added.
