China has generously provided South Africa with 450 gasoline generators to help address the nation’s severe power shortages.

The official reception for the generators is scheduled for Thursday, and will be overseen by Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

These generators are intended to serve as backup power sources, aiming to mitigate the impact of power outages on essential services in clinics, schools, and courts, as highlighted by the presidency on Tuesday.

This donation is part of the Technical Assistance Programme, a commitment established between China and South Africa during the BRICS summit in Johannesburg last August.

As per the agreement, China pledged to donate emergency equipment valued at 167 million rand ($8.9 million; £7 million) along with a development grant of 500 million rand.

South Africa has grappled with persistent power cuts, known as load-shedding, causing significant inconvenience.

The frequent and prolonged outages have left millions of people without electricity for several hours each day, impacting various cities and towns across the country.
