South Africa: Probe launched into alleged AI role in President Ramaphosa’s speech

President

The South African presidency is reportedly conducting an investigation into the possibility that segments of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent speech were generated using an AI chatbot ChatGPT, as suggested by local media.

Online claims surfaced asserting that a portion of the speech delivered at an education forum did not originate from the president or his team of speechwriters.

Vincent Magwenya, the president’s spokesperson, refuted these claims, stating that AI tools like ChatGPT are not utilized for content creation such as speeches.

He clarified that specific parts of the speech were authored by the education department on behalf of the president’s office. Magwenya further mentioned that they are actively looking into the source of the content in question.

Expressing disapproval, Magwenya emphasized that resorting to AI for speechwriting or any content creation is unacceptable.

He stated that appropriate action would be taken if the reports regarding AI involvement in the speech are confirmed to be accurate, as reported by The South African news outlet.
