South Korean man jailed for praising North Korea in poem

A 68-year-old South Korean man named Lee Yoon-seop received a 14-month jail sentence for praising North Korea in a poem.
He advocated for Korean unification in a piece published in North Korea’s state media in 2016, mentioning the benefits of a unified socialist system.
Lee violated a law prohibiting public praise of North Korea and was convicted for his actions.
In his poem titled “Means of Unification,” he argued that a united Korea could potentially reduce instances of suicide and debt.
This poem was recognized as a winner in a North Korean poetry contest held in November 2016.
Lee had previously served a 10-month sentence for a similar offense.

The court in Seoul stated that he continued to spread substantial propaganda that glorified North Korea.
Additionally, Lee had posted pro-North Korea comments online in 2013 while also sharing anti-state content on South Korean platforms.
South Korea’s National Security Act strictly prohibits the promotion and praise of “anti-government” organizations.
