South Korea: “True crime” fan given life sentence for murdering stranger “out of curiosity”

A South Korean court has sentenced Jung Yoo-jung, 23, to life imprisonment for the murder of an English-language teacher, an act she claimed was driven by curiosity about murder, influenced by her fascination with true crime shows and novels.

Jung, described as a true crime enthusiast, expressed an intense desire to experience committing a murder.

Using an online tutoring app, she arranged a meeting with a 26-year-old teacher in Busan under false pretenses.

Posing as a student’s mother seeking lessons, she gained access to the victim’s home and brutally stabbed her over 100 times, even after her victim had died.

Prosecutors, who sought the death penalty, revealed Jung’s extensive search history related to methods of killing and disposing of bodies.

Despite this, she made little effort to evade surveillance cameras, which captured her repeatedly entering and leaving the victim’s home.

The court cited the widespread fear caused by the random and planned nature of the crime, highlighting the erosion of trust within the community.

Although Jung initially claimed mental disorders influenced her actions, the court dismissed her plea due to the meticulous planning and inconsistencies in her statements to the police.

While South Korea retains the death penalty, it hasn’t executed anyone since 1997.

Jung’s case, rooted in her macabre curiosity spurred by crime media, culminated in a life sentence for her heinous actions.
