Dormaahene barred from Berekumhene’s funeral to prevent potential conflicts

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, was unable to carry out his decision to attend the burial ceremonies of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Dr. Amankona Diawuo II, in the Bono Region.

The Sunyani High Court restrained him from participating in the funeral on Thursday, November 23, 2023, to prevent potential disturbances in the area.

This legal intervention came in response to an application filed by a member of the Berekum Traditional Council, Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II.

The court order aimed to prevent any breach of peace, considering the Dormaahene’s decision to attend the funeral on the same day as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Berekum Traditional Council had initially planned for the Dormaahene and members of the Bono Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, where he serves as President, to participate in the burial rites on Wednesday, November 22. On the other hand, the Asantehene, who holds authority over Berekum, was scheduled to attend on Thursday, November 23, as per tradition.

However, the Dormaahene’s unexpected decision to attend concurrently with the Asantehene raised concerns among the Berekum Traditional Council, prompting legal action to prevent potential clashes.

The court order mandated the Ghana Police Service to assist in enforcing the injunction, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace in Berekum and its surroundings.

The legal action sought to preempt any disorder arising from the simultaneous presence of the Asantehene and the Dormaahene, considering recent tensions and public statements from the Dormaahene regarding Dormaa’s affiliation with Asanteman.

Meanwhile, more than 20 VIP buses, filled to capacity, departed from the Manhyia Palace for the final funeral rites on Thursday.

The Berekum area was reportedly crowded with people paying their last respects to the late Omanhene.
