Nigeria: Over 4,000 prisoners freed to alleviate jail overcrowding
Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed the release of over 4,000 prisoners aimed at alleviating overcrowding, primarily focusing on individuals detained for failure to pay fines.
This move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s strategy, emphasizing the implementation of alternative non-custodial sentences.
Highlighting the pressing issue of prison overcrowding, the United Nations has underscored that Nigeria’s prisons currently operate at more than double their intended capacity.
This situation often leads to prolonged detention periods for suspects awaiting trial.
