South Sudan President fires police chief amid alleged coup reports

Sudan

South Sudan President Salva Kiir has dismissed the police chief amidst a crackdown on security officials following alleged reports of an attempted coup against him.

In a televised decree on Tuesday night, the president announced the replacement of Lt Gen Majak Akec Malok with Lt Gen Atem Marol Biar.

Amidst rumors of a coup emerging on November 11th while Kiir was in Saudi Arabia for the Saudi-Africa summit, security officials played down the speculations.

A day later, the Sudans Post website reported the arrest of 27 military and intelligence personnel.

In the fractured East African nation, long-awaited security reforms are underway as it prepares for its first election since gaining independence in 2011.

Simultaneously, the UN Security Council has extended the peacekeeping force’s mandate in the disputed Abyei region, claimed by both South Sudan and Sudan, for another year.
