Zimbabwe opposition activist abducted during by-elections campaign found dead
A Zimbabwean opposition activist, Tapfumanei Masaya, was discovered deceased in a decomposed state on the outskirts of Harare, as confirmed by his party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
The CCC urged the police to thoroughly investigate the “heinous crime” and bring the culprits to justice, demanding action for the abduction that occurred while Masaya was campaigning for a party candidate ahead of the December 9 by-elections.
While the police acknowledged the discovery of a body in the mentioned location, they stated that the identity of the deceased individual was yet to be confirmed, promising further details later.
The by-elections were prompted by what the CCC referred to as an “illegal and fraudulent” recall of its members.
The party claimed that more than a dozen opposition MPs lost their seats after a self-declared interim secretary-general announced their dismissal from the party.
The CCC attributed the activist’s death to the repercussions of the recalls, emphasizing the loss of “our change champion.”
This tragic incident aligns with a series of abductions targeting opposition figures and human rights activists in Zimbabwe, a trend that the CCC has attributed to state agents, a claim refuted by the ruling Zanu-PF party.
