South African professor elected to United Nations’ top court
University of Pretoria law professor Dire Tladi has made history by becoming the first South African appointed as a judge at the UN International Court of Justice.
President Cyril Ramaphosa praised Prof Tladi’s election as an exceptional personal achievement that the nation proudly shares.
He is part of a group of five judges elected by the UN’s General Assembly and the Security Council for nine-year terms starting February next year.
The ICJ serves as the UN’s primary judicial body, offering legal counsel to UN agencies and resolving legal disputes between nations.
Candidates must secure an absolute majority in both the General Assembly and Security Council to be elected.
Despite other African candidates from Zambia, Egypt, and the Democratic Republic of Congo not being chosen, Prof Tladi’s appointment stands as a significant milestone.
