NHIA Touts Achievements In Contributing To Health Needs Of Ghanaians As It Marks 20th Anniversary

The Regional Public Relations Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority in the Western Region, Raymond Awuah, says that despite challenges encountered by the introduction of the scheme, there have been successes chalked up by the Authority.

Mr Awuah, in an interview on the Western Echo show, touched on the Authority leveraging technology and data to ensure positive health outcomes.

According to him, the scheme has brought significant improvements to the health needs of Ghanaians within two decades of its introduction.

“We’ve done a lot. We improved the life expectancy of Ghanaians, although there are challenges. When you weigh the challenges and the benefits NHIS has given Ghanaians, it is far better.

“One of the improvements that NHIS has made is the provision of guidelines governing our operations.
We have introduced the biometric, which has come to solve the problem of duplication.”

“We have moved to another level with the My NHIS app, where one sits in the comfort of their homes and registers with their Ghana card.”

Apart from this, Mr. Awuah pointed out that improved claims, increased healthcare facilities, and taking care of the health needs of residents of Ghana are part of the success stories.

“Since the implementation of the scheme, many children who suffered from childhood cancer have been beneficiaries of the policy.

“Recently the payments of claims have been good. We’ve cleared arrears from last year till this year. If our facilities are able to submit their claims early, the Authority pays on time.”

” On the benefits package, we started with 95 per cent of diseases, other packages were added just last year. They include family planning, sickle cell, and childhood cancers amongst others,”
