World Bank to offer Ghana $150 million in aid for the Akosombo Dam spillage
The World Bank has expressed its willingness to assist the Ghanaian government in responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Lower Volta region, which was caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage and led to the displacement of thousands of residents, along with the loss of their homes, farms, and businesses.
Michelle Keane, the Operations Manager of the World Bank for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, shared the World Bank’s sympathy for the affected victims during the 3rd Conference on Fisheries and Coastal Environment in Accra.
She also highlighted the organization’s readiness to support government efforts.
Keane emphasized the importance of developing a long-term sustainability and risk management strategy for the Volta River and Volta Delta to determine safe living conditions and sustainable livelihoods for communities along the Volta River while maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
She encouraged the Ghanaian government and its partners to utilize the $150 million loan facility approved by the World Bank for Ghana under the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA) to address these challenges.
