Korle-Bu Renal unit set to resume operations today

Korle-Bu

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s renal unit will recommence providing services to patients starting today, November 6, 2023.

According to sources familiar with the situation, this decision was reached during a meeting held last Friday, November 3.

It was unanimously agreed that the unit, which had been closed to outpatients since May 22, 2023, should reopen to serve patients after months of inactivity.

During the closure, patients had to seek dialysis services at private hospitals and other facilities. On September 27, a partial reopening took place, accompanied by an announcement of a substantial increase in the cost of dialysis treatment per session, from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42.

Nevertheless, due to public backlash, the price hike was revoked, and the unit remained inaccessible to outpatients.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, issued a directive to the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to promptly reopen the unit.
