Francis-Xavier Sosu, a human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina, has called for the modernization of Ghana’s criminal justice system, which he believes is outdated.

He pointed out that criminal justice systems are evolving globally, and it’s time for Ghana to update its laws to keep up with international standards.

Sosu criticized the retention of old statutes without reform, describing it as a form of legal colonialism. He stressed the need to consider Ghana’s specific circumstances and make the necessary changes.

His remarks come in the context of ongoing discussions about amending the country’s sentencing regime, including the consideration of an alternative sentencing bill.

Sosu encouraged the legislature to take inspiration from the justice systems of more developed countries to facilitate the passage of this bill.
