The Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Cocoa Farmers at Elubo within the Jomoro district of the Western Region, Augustine Ackah, has expressed concern over the activities of illegal miners that are affecting their cocoa farmers.
According to him, harmful chemicals used by these miners seep into the river and find their way into the roots of the cocoa trees, thereby affecting the crop.
“The harmful chemicals used by the illegal miners eventually get into the Tano River, and this affects our cocoa trees. This is of great concern to us. When the leaves of the tree turn red, it indicates that the crop is affected.”
Mr. Ackah also said their livelihood and source of living are under threat.
He pleaded with the government to further increase the price of cocoa as compared to neighbouring countries such as Ivory Coast.
“We are gradually losing our livelihoods because of the activities of illegal miners. The government has increased the price, but it’s very insignificant. The government could have done more for cocoa farmers by increasing it.”
