EC to brief Parliament on November 8 regarding limited voter registration
Electoral Commission Chair Jean Mensa is set to address Parliament on November 8, 2023, regarding the recent limited voter registration, which added over 600,000 new voters starting on September 12, 2023.
The Minority in Parliament has expressed concerns about the EC’s decision to limit registration to its district offices, placing a financial burden on Members of Parliament.
During a business statement presentation, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu announced that the EC Chair would provide an update to the House.
He also emphasized the need to hear from the EC before making judgments.
Some members of the public have criticized the EC for restricting registration centers to district offices, which are often inconvenient for eligible voters.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society organizations called for more accessible registration locations, but the EC maintained its district office registration approach.
The 2023 limited voter registration exercise concluded on October 2, 2023, without an extension date.
