Market women in the Dome market have openly displayed their dissatisfaction with the incumbent Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, by jeering and booing her during a recent visit to the constituency.
The Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament had been absent from her constituency and parliamentary duties for over a year, faced strong disapproval from her constituents as she attempted to reconnect with them.
A widely circulated video on social media captured the scene, in which Adwoa Safo attempted to engage with market women by offering a friendly handshake. However, her efforts were met with loud disapproval, as people hooted, shouted, and clapped to express their discontent.
Market women in the video were heard shouting, “Adwoa Safo, we want change!” and “Adwoa Safo, we don’t want you anymore!” The former Minister for Gender and Social Protection chose to ignore the chants of disapproval and continued her duties by greeting other traders who extended their hands to her.
Adwoa Safo’s extended absence from parliament in 2022 stirred significant controversy.
She left the country in November 2021 and failed to appear before the Privileges Committee when summoned to explain her absence. The committee ultimately recommended that her seat be declared vacant, but the Speaker of Parliament ruled that the report was not final and must be presented to the entire House for a decision.
This situation led to disagreements within parliamentary ranks. She recently issued an apology to the President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the controversies arising from her extended absence from parliamentary duties.
