Zimbabwe opposition to boycott ‘criminal’ by-elections
Zimbabwe’s primary opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, has announced that his party will not engage in what he characterized as ” criminal” by-elections meant to fill 15 parliamentary seats left vacant due to the controversial recall of members.
These seats became available after an individual claiming to be the interim secretary-general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party declared that the MPs were no longer party members.
Consequently, by-elections have been set for December 9th, following the parliamentary speaker’s declaration of the seats as vacant earlier this month.
Chamisa has rejected the recall of these lawmakers, asserting that Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-proclaimed party secretary-general, is an “imposter.”
In a recent interview, Chamisa stated that his party would not partake in what he considers ” unconstitutional” by-elections, asserting,
“We don’t participate in crime,” he added.
A legal case challenging the recall of these MPs is scheduled to be heard on November 2nd.
