The Volta River Authority (VRA) has revealed that it expended more than GH¢20 million on providing relief items for individuals impacted by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The VRA reported that this sum was utilized to procure essential supplies like food, mattresses, and medical provisions.

Engineer Ken Arthur, a deputy chief executive officer of the VRA, expressed the organization’s commitment to relieving the distress of more than 36,000 individuals impacted by the spillage.

According to Deputy CEO Engineer Ken Arthur, VRA has allocated GH¢20 million to alleviate the adverse effects caused by the necessary discharge of excess water into the Akosombo Dam.

The VRA assured the public that, along with NADMO (National Disaster Management Organisation) and other relevant agencies, they continue to monitor the situation and provide essential support to ensure the well-being of the affected communities and emphasized that no one will be neglected during this emergency situation.

Engineer Ken Arthur also refuted allegations that the VRA failed to sensitize residents before the spillage occurred.

“We took all the necessary steps to ensure that the Dam was not compromised, and we had all the emergency preparedness protocols in place to forewarn the potentially affected persons before the spill event started. I can say that it is the reason we have not recorded any casualties because the potentially affected persons had enough time to move away from the dangerous places.”
