57,000 self-employed individuals registered in the SSNIT scheme
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) management reports that 57,000 self-employed individuals have been successfully enrolled in the scheme through their vigorous Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) initiative.
In contrast, last year saw only 14,000 self-employed workers registering for the scheme. The increase is attributed to the SEED initiative’s intensified and active public awareness campaigns.
Social Security and National Insurance Trust is committed to changing the trend where the elderly rely solely on their families rather than Social Security and National Insurance Trust benefits.
Director General of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, highlighted this during an event organized by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and SSNIT in the Eastern Region.
Dr. John Ofori – Tenkorang took the opportunity to dispel the misconception that Social Security and National Insurance Trust exclusively caters to government workers.
He clarified, “Well, the myth is that we heard about SSNIT, and we thought it was for government workers only. That myth is not true. Right now we have about almost two million active contributors on SSNIT. Only about 700,000 of them are people who work for government and there are 1.2 million of them who work for private companies.”
Joshua Ansah, Deputy Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), expressed his support for the partnership with Social Security and National Insurance Trust, emphasizing its significance in securing the future of informal sector workers.
