Ghana to receive IMF assistance in addressing corruption
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has received Ghana’s request for technical assistance in addressing corruption.
Ghana’s request aligns with its commitments under the $3 billion IMF program, from which the country is expected to receive a second tranche of $600 million in November this year.
The IMF program Ghana has entered aims to address the nation’s current economic challenges, among other issues, while promoting transparency and combating corruption.
As part of the program, the Ghanaian government has made several commitments to combat corruption and enhance transparency in its daily operations.
To fulfill these commitments, authorities have sought IMF technical assistance to conduct a governance corruption diagnostic assessment.
This assessment will be used to support the ongoing efforts to update the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan.
Additionally, under the IMF program, the government is expected to address weaknesses in the existing asset declaration system for public officials by enacting a new Conduct of Public Officers Act.
Abebe Aemro Selassie, the Director of the IMF African Department, provided an update on Ghana’s progress during a press briefing at the IMF-World Bank meetings in Marrakech, Morocco.
He mentioned that a request has been made for the governance diagnostic report, but its current status is uncertain due to resource availability. However, he expressed confidence that it would be addressed soon.
The International Monetary Fund has stated its commitment to provide the necessary information to creditors to ensure Ghana receives the second tranche of IMF funds and progresses with the program.
The hope is that ongoing discussions among official creditors will enable the program to move forward smoothly.
Selassie emphasized that Ghana has fulfilled its obligations, and the focus now shifts to creditors taking action.
The government won’t be asked to make further adjustments, as creditors haven’t requested them. The International Monetary Fund is prepared to provide all necessary information to facilitate the program’s continuation.
