Minister for Communication and Digitalization Calls for Innovative Tools to Combat Disinformation
Ursula Owusu Ekuful, the Minister for Communication and Digitalization, has advocated for the establishment of collaborative stakeholder policies and regulations aimed at curbing the misuse of social media for disseminating false information within Ghana.
The urgent need for this appeal arises from the widespread use of artificial intelligence by malicious individuals for the dissemination of fabricated news.
The Member of Parliament representing the Ablekuman West constituency further emphasized that the government is committed to upholding the fundamental human rights of Ghanaian citizens. Hence, it is imperative to shield the public from the impact of deceptive information.
She encouraged all stakeholders to collaboratively engage in the formulation of policies aimed at shielding citizens from the adverse consequences of misinformation while preserving Ghana’s peace.
“Nobody wants to use the heavy-handed approach of internet shutdowns or instructing network operators to censor or limit the information that people put out “, she said at a public lecture on the theme “impact of disinformation on electoral integrity, peace and security in Africa”.
“Artificial intelligence can be utilized to detect and flag suspicious content to enable efficient and real-time fact-checking” she added.
