Akosombo Dam shows no increase in the last 24 hours

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has reported that the water level at the Akosombo Dam has remained stable over the last 24 hours, following recent concerns about its rising levels.

In an interview, the Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward Obeng Kenzo, shared this information on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

“We are below the 277.50 feet level. Today’s rise was zero which means the inflow and what we are spilling is the same. The level is around 277.36 as of this morning,” he stated.

Earlier in the week, Mr. Kenzo expressed concerns about the continuous rise in the dam’s water level. He explained that it was necessary to release water from the dam to prevent it from overtopping its operational level of 277.5 feet, as surpassing this level could jeopardize the dam’s integrity and result in severe consequences for the surrounding areas.

While there are no immediate plans to release more water from the dam, Mr. Kenzo emphasized that any unexpected heavy rains could force such a release.

The controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams began on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent increase in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.

Thousands of residents in various regions have been affected by the spillage, with some homes submerged as a result.
