Nigeria to begin distributing $1.5bn cash to the poor

 financial

The Nigerian government has unveiled plans to distribute $1.5 billion to assist 15 million vulnerable households affected by surging food, fuel, and commodity prices.

The financial aid aims to provide each eligible household with $32 over a three-month period, beginning this month.

While the precise commencement date was not disclosed during the Finance Minister’s press conference in Abuja, Nigeria, it is intended to address the financial struggles of households in a country with over 200 million people.

The government initially introduced the program in July, intending to provide $10 to 12 million households.

However, this move was met with public outcry, with many deeming the amount insufficient.

In response, President Bola Tinubu announced a revised plan during independence day celebrations earlier this month.

There are ongoing questions about the eligibility criteria for receiving the financial assistance and the selection process for households.

Economic hardships have been exacerbated by the removal of a fuel subsidy by the government in May, coinciding with President Tinubu taking office.

According to Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics, approximately 63% of Nigerians are classified as “multidimensionally poor,” experiencing a range of deprivations.
