WFD: Food Safety Should Be A Priority To Every Citizen – FDA

Consumers are cautioned to be vigilant about the food items they purchase on the market as Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark World Food Day.

This year, the theme of World Food Day is “Water is life, and water is Food. Leave no one behind.”

Food can come in the form of canned, bottled, and others.

According to the Regional Director, of the FDA, Mr. Martin Kusi the Authority is making sure that food consumed in the region is wholesome and devoid of causing harm to the public.

He also revealed that about 80 per cent of food in the region is safe for consumption.

“I can say what we consume here in the region is 80–90 percent safe. We move along the street to food joints to make sure they do the right thing and ensure food is safe for sale.

People suffer consequences if food is not safe.”

Public Relations Officer, Solomon Bonney says, that to ensure food safety for the public, the Authority works concurrently with the Assemblies to regulate the activities of food vendors.

He said, “We have a new initiative called the street food permit. Initially, it was the work of the Assemblies but now we do it concurrently with them.”

However, in an interview on Western Echo Show on Beach FM, Mr Bonney urged consumers to look out for the expiry date, and language written on the products before purchasing.
